Tim’s Travel Notes

Tim’s Suggested 10-Day Alaska Itinerary

Tim has spent decades welcoming travelers to Talkeetna and sharing ideas for exploring Alaska. This suggested route begins in Fairbanks, includes time in Talkeetna and continues through Southcentral Alaska to Valdez, Seward and Anchorage.

This itinerary requires a rental car. Arrange a one-way rental in advance, picking up the vehicle in Fairbanks and returning it in Seward. We recommend contacting Alaskan Car Rental to confirm availability and the pickup and drop-off arrangements for your travel dates.

This is a personal planning guide, not a travel package. Transportation schedules, road conditions, tour availability and business operations can change. Confirm current details directly with each provider before traveling.

Fairbanks to Anchorage, with time in Talkeetna

This route moves from Interior Alaska toward the coast at a steady pace, with time set aside in Talkeetna partway through the trip. Distances between stops are long, so plan transportation early and leave room in the schedule for changing conditions.

  • Days 1–3: Fairbanks and Denali National Park
  • Days 4–5: Talkeetna
  • Day 6: Hatcher Pass and Matanuska Glacier
  • Days 7–9: Valdez, Whittier and Seward
  • Day 10: Alaska SeaLife Center and train to Anchorage

Day by day

  1. Day 1: Arrive in Fairbanks

    Fairbanks

Arrive in Fairbanks and settle into your accommodations. Depending on your arrival time, consider visiting a local museum or exploring the city.

  2. Day 2: Travel south

Fairbanks to the Denali National Park area — approximately a 2.5-hour drive

Travel south from Fairbanks to the Denali National Park area. Allow time to settle in before choosing an afternoon activity. Possible options include hiking, rafting, local programs, scenic viewpoints, or simply resting and preparing for the days ahead.

  3. Day 3: Explore Denali National Park

    Denali National Park area

Use the day to explore Denali National Park through the transportation and visitor options currently available. Services, road access and tour formats can change, so review current information before finalizing your plans.

  4. Day 4: Choose a hike and continue to Talkeetna

Byers Lake or K’esugi Ridge, followed by Talkeetna

Before arriving in Talkeetna, consider stopping for one hike at either Byers Lake or the K’esugi Ridge trail system. Choose whichever best matches your interests, available time, ability and current trail conditions. Only one of these hikes is recommended for this travel day.

After the hike, continue south to Talkeetna, a small Alaska town located on the Talkeetna Spur Road. Allow time to arrive, settle in and walk through the historic downtown at an unhurried pace.

Denali Overlook Inn is located in Talkeetna, 5.1 miles from downtown, and is one option for the Talkeetna portion of this route.

  5. Day 5: Choose your Talkeetna experience

    Talkeetna

Talkeetna is a good base for flightseeing around Denali and the Alaska Range, river trips, fishing, sled-dog experiences, trails and local history. Choose one primary activity and leave additional time to explore Talkeetna at a relaxed pace.

  6. Day 6: Hatcher Pass and Matanuska Glacier

    Hatcher Pass and Matanuska Glacier

Travel south toward Hatcher Pass and Matanuska Glacier. Hatcher Pass offers alpine scenery, hiking routes and historic mining sites.

The road over Hatcher Pass generally opens around early July and remains accessible until snow returns, but exact opening and closing dates depend on weather and road conditions. Check current conditions before attempting the drive. Roads in this area can be narrow, steep and affected by changing weather.

Continue toward Matanuska Glacier and allow enough time for scenic stops along the way. Glacier access and activities may require reservations and may be operated by private providers, so confirm current access requirements before traveling.

  7. Day 7: Follow the Matanuska River to Valdez

    Matanuska River corridor and Valdez

Continue along the Matanuska River corridor and travel toward Valdez. Allow plenty of time for the drive, changing road conditions and scenic stops along the way.

    Recommended accommodations in Valdez include:

Review the Alaska Marine Highway schedule and reserve passenger and vehicle space well in advance. Valdez–Whittier sailings are limited, seasonal and do not operate every day. The remainder of this itinerary must be coordinated around your confirmed ferry departure.

  8. Day 8: Ferry to Whittier and continue to Seward

    Valdez, Whittier and Seward

Board the Alaska Marine Highway ferry in Valdez at the time shown on your confirmed reservation and travel to Whittier with your rental vehicle.

After arriving in Whittier, continue by road to Seward. For dinner in Seward, Tim recommends Ray’s Waterfront, a seasonal restaurant overlooking the harbor.

  9. Day 9: Explore Seward

    Seward

Spend the day exploring Seward, a coastal town with harbor walks, marine wildlife tours, local shops and trail access nearby.

Use the Seward Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center’s official website to review current tours, restaurants, trails, seasonal events and local transportation.

  10. Day 10: Alaska SeaLife Center and train to Anchorage

    Seward to Anchorage

Visit the Alaska SeaLife Center before returning your rental car in Seward. After returning the vehicle, use a prearranged taxi, shuttle or available rideshare service to reach the Seward train depot.

Board the Alaska Railroad’s Coastal Classic for the scenic journey to Anchorage. Confirm admission times, vehicle-return arrangements, local transportation and the train schedule in advance.

A note from Tim

Alaska rewards travelers who leave a little room in the plan. Weather shifts, road conditions change and the best moments are often the unplanned ones between the places you meant to see.

Take your time in Talkeetna, talk with the people you meet along the way and let the country set the pace. That is how I have always enjoyed it most.
