Denali Overlook Inn timber-frame lodge illuminated by warm evening light in Talkeetna, Alaska

Our Story

Handcrafted in Talkeetna

Denali Overlook Inn was shaped by local craftsmanship, a love of photography and a lasting connection to Talkeetna. From its hand-hewn timber frame to its beginnings as a base for photography tours, the property reflects the people and landscape that surround it.

A lodge built by local hands

The four-story timber-frame lodge was built with hand-hewn white spruce sourced within 16 miles of the property. Talkeetna builder Scott Holcomb led the construction and set the ridge beam in 1999.

Just below the highest eave, the inscription ‘S.H. 1999’ remains as his signature on the building. Exposed mortise-and-tenon joinery and ornamental steel hangers forged by Talkeetna artist Rob Holt contribute to the lodge’s distinctive character.

Created with photographers in mind

Denali Overlook Inn was originally conceived as a home base for photography tours led by photographer Steve Gilroy. In its early years, photographers traveled to Talkeetna and used the inn as both a base and a classroom.

The property’s broad outlook offers opportunities to photograph Denali, the Alaska Range, changing seasonal light and the northern sky. All mountain and aurora visibility depends on weather and seasonal conditions.

Several of Steve’s photographs continue to be displayed inside the inn, preserving a connection to the property’s early creative purpose.

From dry cabin to guest retreat

Northern Exposure Cabin originally served as a dwelling for the owners while the main lodge was being built. Like many traditional Alaskan cabins, it began as a dry cabin without running water or indoor plumbing.

The cabin was later expanded with a full bathroom, kitchenette and additional living space. Today, it offers a separate place to stay just steps from the main house, while cabin guests remain welcome in the lodge’s common areas.

A lasting connection to Talkeetna

Tim Costello first arrived in Talkeetna in 1992 while visiting his daughter, Trisha. Captivated by the community and its surroundings, Tim and Trisha purchased the Talkeetna Roadhouse in 1996 and became part of the local community.

Tim later became closely involved with Denali Overlook Inn and continues to share his knowledge of Talkeetna and Alaska with guests.
